TV’s gotten really good

Old is gold….eh, not really. Take any stock from the 70’s and view it today and it has been appreciated. I guess using inflation to justify progression isn’t a great analogy. Ok, let me try this again. The modern-day NBA is criticized for being less physical, but the pace at which these players play is much faster. These athletes are bigger, stronger, and faster but yesteryear greats like Hakeem Olajuwon think Michael Jordan is the GOAT over Lebron because he played in a “superior” league. You think if the internet was booming through the mid 90’s with enough distractions, Jordan would have achieved “Be Like Mike” status? Shaq, you maybe think that if Adam Silver didn’t fine these players so hard, Draymond Green wouldn’t be out of control with the “physicality”? I’m starting to sound like JJ Reddick. I’m a firm believer that any consumer product has evolved for the better. There might be some tradeoffs, but the overall goal to hold the attention of a mass audience is further emphasized and protected.

Tarantino’s got to settle down. His comments as to “I would not be making films today!” is completely nuts. Being a video store clerk for Blockbuster is an absolutely shitty job. I am not questioning Quentin’s genius, but it would be a lottery ticket for that usher at a movie theater to be handed the right to make a film. Plus, any shitty movie that’s made today is superior to the “Bounty Law” show depicted in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”. Just to be clear I love Tarantino!

Vince Gilligan! Solid…. Taylor Sheridan! yep…. Mike White! Iconic… Three names that absolutely eviscerates every “Get off my lawn” critic. Guys, you did not have it better back in the day. Don’t get me wrong, some of the liberalism shown on screen is maybe a bit exaggerated and the complexity of problems are oversimplified. But Hollywood is in a better place today than it was 30-50 years ago. Yes, there are timeless pieces: “Psycho”, “The Godfather”, “Back to the Future”, “Die Hard”, “The Shawshank Redemption”, “Seven” … There’s been a lot of greats, I get it. But most genres have been revamped for the better. “Rush Hour” is a better version of “48 Hours”. “Interstellar” is a better version of any going to space movie. “Gone Girl” is a better version of “Fatal Attraction”. Obviously, the CGI has gotten better, but the pace at which films move now are far superior. Loopholes are painstakingly eliminated and extra care is taken for continuity. The acting is much more relatable rather than Pacino dialing it up to a hundred regardless of the mundanity of the situation. Lastly, due to the viciousness of social media, a “bad movie” is maligned to a degree that incites fear in every filmmaker never like before to sculpt out a masterpiece. We’re in a better time, my friends, so stop bitching like sorority girls and get with the times!
