One Battle After Another
PTA is back! This drama, no, comedy, actually a thriller, eh whatever this is, is life changing. I felt like Keanu Reeves in John Wick 3 travelling through the desert to avoid excommunicado; and it was worth it. Leonardo DiCaprio has repeatedly been playing blundering idiots since “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and once again, knocks this one right out of the park. His scenes with Benecio Del Tero, who doesn’t have a lot to say but his poise as Sensei Carlos is masterful, are a laugh riot. Sean Penn properly plays the menacing fool while the gorgeous Teyana Taylor gracefully plays a rebel who is in control even while being a captive.
Enough about the actors; this is a Paul Thomas Anderson masterpiece. Any obnoxious critic can make an argument that “Boogie Nights” and “Magnolia” were Scorsese rip-offs. A simpleton can argue that without Daniel Day Lewis’ performance, “There will be Blood” is a decent historical piece based upon Upton Sinclair’s “Oil”. But “One Battle After Another” is like Steph Curry winning finals MVP in 2022; there is no more debate. You are one of the greats Paul Thomas Anderson. That’s all I have to say! Don’t make me wait too long for the next one.
